National Pow Wow

Nationalnationalpowwowlogo Powwow has been held every three years since 1969, with dances taking place all over the country including Colorado, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Kansas. The National Powwow community exists to respectfully share in the values of American Indian culture and strives to increase awareness of American Indian culture and traditions among the non-Indian community with the support and guidance of Indian people. We are fortunate to have established relationships with exceptional singers, dancers, craftsmen and historians from all over the US and internationally, and we rely on the combined knowledge and experience of our community to promote education regarding American Indian culture. We are proud to enter our forty second year of National Powwow and invite you to join our celebration to be held July 6-9, 2011 at the Hendricks County Fairgrounds in Danville, Indiana.

The four day event will include exhibition and intertribal dancing each evening, many family-sponsored “special” dances and events, the first ever National Powwow Princess Contest, a Grand Parade around the powwow grounds, a re-created tipi village, dozens of educational seminars, one of the country’s most outstanding craft exhibitions and contests, quality food and craft vendors, and of course, exceptional singing by drum groups and singers from all corners of the United States.

The National Powwow XV theme is “The Future of Tradition”, and as we so often (and appropriately) focus on honoring our elders, our attention turns this year to honoring the little people that dance and sing with us, the tiny tots who are indeed the future of our traditions. In keeping with the theme, National Powwow XV will host a children’s Discovery Area with kids’ activities throughout the event, including a kid’s- only powwow.

National Powwow XV will also sponsor a coat drive for our friends and relatives on reservations such as Cheyenne River, SD where blizzard conditions in early 2010 left 14,000 people on the reservation without power for nearly a month with average nightly temperatures falling to twenty-five degrees below zero. Please consider having your church, youth group, school, or civic organization collect coats as well to help with National Powwow’s mission.
